Hello

I trust you are all warm and wrapped up!

This month we are bringing you the wisdom of the squat! We highlight the benefits of doing this move correctly and adding a few squats into your day, allowing you to celebrate the posterior!

It really does make your daily routine more inspired when you have people to help you set and reach your goals. Our instructors at The View Studio are here to help you achieve results by setting realistic goals and top tips on how to add movement into your day. Meet Vinyasa yoga instructor Ashley Gierlach.

A VIEW TO VINYASA FLOW & ADULT BALLET

IMG 2005

1. Hello Ashley! What do you teach at The View Studio?
I teach Adult Ballet & Pointe Thursday evenings and Vinyasa Flow Yoga Saturday mornings

2. What made you choose to teach Yoga and Adult Ballet?
Ballet has been a part of my life since I was four, it defines me. Teaching ballet is just another extension of self. After an injury I turned to yoga for rehabilitation and fell in love with Vinyasa yoga because it feels so much like dancing. Vinyasa flows through every pose and focuses on the balance of flexibility and toning, all of which is incredibly similar to ballet. My ballet background has created a foundation for my yoga practice. In every class, I hope to show that the synergy between the grace of ballet and the balance of yoga can provide an organic based training with holistic results.

3. What is your favourite posture?
Three-legged dog. This pose grounds me, centers me, while also expands me.

4. Describe yourself in 3 words.
Conscious. Tenacious. Nurturing.

5. Your top tip for our View Studio clients to add movement into their day?
Ha, ha my top tip would be to move whenever using laptops and TVs. I would suggest that they work out during this time: bicep curls when the kettle boils, some sun salutations before taking a morning shower, stretches when watching TV, pelvic tilts when sitting using the laptop. There are always moments of stillness we can fill with movement.

DROP IT LIKE A SQUAT

The squat in essence is a great way to wake up your bottom and hamstrings if you have spent most of your day sitting. Humans have been squatting since the hunter-gatherer days. When we squat we strengthen the back body, building muscle in the bottom, hamstring, quads, calves and abdominals which help to promote mobility and balance.

Are you ready to perfect the squat?

Ok, so start off in good posture:

▪ Feet hip width apart, hold onto your desk or kitchen counter if you need a bit of extra support.
▪ Pelvis in neutral (think about your pelvis like a bucket of water and not spilling any water)
▪ Shoulders melting away from the ears and ribcage lifted away from the pelvis but not tipping
▪ Imagine reaching your bottom out to sit on that chair or stool you may well have spent the whole day sitting on (poke your bottom right out)
▪ Check your knees are directly above the ankles and not pushing forwards. Weight should be into the heels.
▪ Right! Now you are ready, bend through the hips and knees and sit back into the heels. On the way back up keep the knees in line with the ankles and lace up the core set of abdominals.

To avoid any back pain DO NOT tuck the bottom under, stick that booty right out. Avoid knee pain by maintaining the above technique and just lower a few inches. Technique is key rather than how low you go.

Add a few squats into your day, it will make the world of difference.
