When you stop ‘sucking in’, the magic happens

April 4, 2025

…. It’s true that there certainly is a link between pelvic floor and core function.

HOUSTON! WE HAVE A PRESSURE ISSUE!
If you suffer from any of the symptoms below, then this guide is for you:
✅ Prolapse
✅ Hernia
✅ Abdominal separation

Let me cover the basics for you to help you understand what I mean by ‘stop sucking in’:

There are 3 cavities to the human body: thoracic, abdominal and pelvic

When there is too much pressure in one of these cavities relative to the others above and below it, you have an imbalance of load (often with every single breath that that person takes).

There are only 3 areas that pressure can go (or get dispersed to):

  • UP into the thoracic cavity towards the diaphragm potentially causing a hiatal hernia.
  • OUT of the abdomen to the weak point in the chain which is the belly button, potentially causing diastasis recti or an umbilical hernia.
  • DOWN towards the pelvic floor which often leads to prolapsed organs and/ or dysfunction of the pelvic floor muscles.

When a client comes to me with pelvic floor dysfunction, together we work on alignment, rib cage mobilisation and breathing mechanics; this is where clients report an improvement in their core strength.

NB – Not once have I suggested they ‘suck their tummy’, or ‘engage their core’. I take a full body approach to prolapse and abdominal separation starting from the feet up.

And, there you have it!

Stop sucking in your abdominals and jump onboard my next Conquer Your Pelvic Floor program, book a 1-1 class, or join a group session to address your breathing mechanics from the feet up, which is one of the key ways to reduce pressure.

Let me know how you get on! @sammacewellness
