Why Feet Matter (More Than You Think!) 👣

July 31, 2025

So why am I so passionate about feet, foot pain, foot mechanics, and barefoot shoes?

I’m currently working through a 6-week course called The Pelvic Foot, and I absolutely love it. Why? Because it makes so much sense. Your feet truly affect everything above them. They’re your foundation— and when that foundation is strong, everything else functions better.

Even if you don’t have foot pain, working on your feet can benefit you a lot. Here’s why:

👣 So You Can Walk Better

I love walking. Before kids, I was a keen hill walker, and this year I finally got back to it. My weekend sanity strolls around Lucklawhill keep me grounded.

But here’s the kicker; working on my feet helped fix my pelvic floor problems. (No more sneeze pee!)

How we walk has a huge impact on long-term health.

Most people walk by pushing their feet and legs forward—essentially falling and catching themselves over and over. This puts pressure on the body, especially the pelvic floor.

A healthier walking pattern uses posterior push-off—extending the hip and pushing off with the big toe. This demands strong, mobile feet and flexible, flat shoes.

🦴 Boost Hip Bone Density

Your foot bone is connected to so much more than just your ankle bone.

For 1-1 clients dealing with pelvic floor dysfunction, I always start with the feet.

Why? Because how we walk provides essential weight-bearing input for our hips—if we’re walking well.

In slippers or heeled shoes, we don’t get that vital hip extension. Without that loading, hip bones can lose density, increasing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. Think slipper shuffle vs. empowered stride.

🍑 Keep Your Pelvic Floor Happy

Better walking = better pelvic floor health.

Here’s how:

Stiff, immobile feet cause poor hip rotation patterns. Hip rotators are part of your pelvic floor, and if they aren’t working well, that’s a red flag.

Posterior push-off walking helps create long, strong pelvic floor muscles that respond when needed.

If you’re not walking well, chances are your pelvic floor is weaker, tighter, and shorter than it should be.

💫 It’s Easy to Start

The best part? Foot work is simple. Do a little consistently, and you’ll see powerful results.

Your feet, hips, and pelvic floor are all deeply connected.

This is why my Happy Feet, Happy Pelvic Floor Day Retreat is about more than just toes—it’s a full-body reset focusing on hips, feet, pelvic floor, and walking technique.
